Sometimes he'd walk around the class carrying the paddle. Sometimes he sat in his chair in one of the rows, while we sat doing our work. He'd literally sit there holding his paddle, as if he where just waiting for a reason to use it. Sometimes he'd find that reason, other times not. It was in his class that I started to notice how every time he paddled someone my heart rate started to rise. I'd get a strange feeling watching someone getting swatted. At the time I didn't understand how something that could be causing someone some discomfort could be causing me some sort of excitement.

--Middle aged woman recalling 4th grade paddlings, and the lifetime spanking fetish they induced
I’ve had many people in non-paddling Michigan ask, with an incredulous tone when they learn of my book, “Why are you explaining the obvious, Jeff? Of course paddling is a sexually abusive act.”
The fact is, however, that there is more spanking and private-school paddling, even in Michigan, than most “Michiganders” are aware of, and the spanking abuse in all venues goes up by a factor of thousands in the Southern US. The sexual nature of spanking, as well as the harmful effects from its brutality, sadism, and torture aspects, unfortunately does need to be explained.
Americans are “full of doublethink” on the torture, sadistic, and sexual aspects of paddling. They know these things exist, but nonetheless somehow manage to put them out of mind because they believe that “Jesus wants us to spank and paddle kids,” or “that’s the way it was always done,” neither of which is true. Our minds “see the abuse” but “don’t see it,” because we don’t know how to deal with it. We are, as a country, very confused on this issue, and “societal dissociation” is perhaps not too strong a term.
We are not, however, confused about the anal rape of children or other types of child sexual abuse that we recognize. No state is writing laws that legalize children being anally raped, as long as bones are not broken and death does not result, and nullifying all child abuse laws whenever teachers “administer anal rape,” as many states have done for paddling with “Teacher Protection Acts.” The psychological damage from the rape of children is generally well known to be the most harmful aspect of that type of abuse, even though severe physical damage can occur from rape, just as it can with paddling. We don’t now bury and ignore rape victim’s psychological damage as we continue to do with victims of paddling. Even though sexual fetishes, PTSD, and many harms have been well documented from paddling, our child paddling laws, in contrast to semi-enlightened laws on child rape, refuse to acknowledge these concerns.
Part of our society’s problem is that we have a conception that rape, even statutory, is always a much more traumatic event to a child or adolescent than paddling is. We don’t even take child rape that seriously either as far as that goes. Most of us now realize that rape is traumatic and carries lifetime harms, even if there is no physical damage, but we put paddling and humiliating child beatings in a “nice box” and assume that it can never come close to rape. I am convinced, after a great deal of study, that the damage from spanking and paddling, both sexual and torture wise, can and often does equal or exceed that of rape.
We need to understand, as some therapists are quick to note, that it does not matter if a child is drowning in 7 feet of water, or 13 feet, or 138 feet. Once any level and any type of child abuse is engaged, especially that which is systematic and ongoing for years, it is very likely to overwhelm a child for life on some level. The child who is so injured is unlikely to be consciously knowledgeable about, and aware of, the extent of the damage. Psychologically damaged humans cannot reliably understand their own harms. The damage is very real and life-long, however, even for victims who think they’ve “moved passed that.”
